Licensing Requirements

As a licensed electrician, you perform activities related to the installation, maintenance, repair, and alteration of equipment and systems that use electricity for residential and commercial purposes. This includes low-voltage wiring.

To qualify for a license, you’ll first have to meet several requirements, starting with education and experience. You must complete a minimum of four years of work for a licensed electrical company or contractor.

Alternatively, you may substitute education for up to two years of experience, with two years of education equating to one year of experience. Unless you’re self-employed, you must submit proof of experience and a statement of current or prospective employment when you apply.

Within 12 months prior to applying for a license, you’ll also have to complete eight hours of coursework on the current or later edition of the NFPA 70. Applicants must be current on taxes for the city of Philadelphia and provide proof of general liability, automobile liability, and workers’ compensation Insurance. You must also provide a 2”x2” photo of yourself and pass a trade exam.

What’s Included in the Exam

Before you can obtain an electrical contractor license, you must pass the 211 Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) standard master electrician exam. This open-book test includes 100 questions covering the following topics:

• General electrical knowledge 
• Reading of electrical plans
• Equipment servicing
• Feeders
• Branch circuits and conductors
• Methods and materials for wiring
• Basic electrical equipment 
• Control devices
• Generators and motors
• Special occupancy rules, including equipment and conditions

You have three hours to complete the exam and must answer 75 or more questions correctly to pass.
