How do I obtain an alcohol alcohol server certification in Washington?
In Washington, you must complete an approved training course & exam to obtain your alcohol server certification. Alcohol server permits are valid for 5 years and expire on the first day of the month following the month you passed your exam in. For example, if you obtained your permit on 1/15/2020 it will expire on 2/1/2025. To renew you must take an approved training course and pass the exam.

What are the types of alcohol server permits?
The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board will issue a Class 12 permit if you are 21 years of age or older. They will issue a Class 13 if you are between the ages of 18 to 21.
Class 12 Permit
- Class 12 permit holders must be at least 21 years old
- This permit is required for anyone who:
- Manages a retail establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption
- Sells, mixes, or draws from a dispensing device alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption
- Supervises a class 13 permit holder
- This permit also grants the abilities of the class 13 permit
- Your MAST permit and a valid ID must be available for inspection whenever performing alcohol related duties such as selling / serving
Class 13 Permit
- Class 13 permit holders must be at least 18 years old
- This permit is required for anyone who:
- Takes order for alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption
- Opens or pours beer or wine into a customer's glass at a customer's table
- This permit also grants the abilities of the class 13 permit
- Your MAST permit and a valid ID must be available for inspection whenever performing alcohol related duties such as selling / serving
