How obtain an alcohol server certification in Tennessee?
In Tennessee, the food handler card expires every 5 years from the date it was issued. For re-certification you must take an approved training course.

What are the requirements for a TABC server permit?
Requirements
- Applicants must be 18 years old
- Complete a TABC certified alcohol awareness program within 1 year of your application date
- Successfully completing the course is not equivalent to being issued a server permit
- New servers have a 61 day grace period to obtain a permit. This is a one time grace period and is not available each time you change employer
- Once issued, the establishment must maintain copies of all server permits
Restrictions
- Applicants may not have a felony conviction for an offense that bears directly on the applicants fitness to practice competently
- Applicants may not have a conviction for any crime related to the sale of alcoholic beverages, controlled substances, embezzlement, or sex related crime
- Applicants may not have had a server permit or similar permit issued in another jurisdiction revoked in the last 5 years
- The individual may not have any ownership interest in any wholesale, retail, or beer license / permit revoked within the last 8 years
- No person holding a TABC permit may have been convicted of a crime which relates directly to the business of alcoholic beverage sales
What does the alcohol server training course cover?
Course Curriculum
- The effect of alcohol on the human body focusing on these elements:
- A complete review of blood alcohol content (BAC)
- Absorption rates and factors affecting the absorption of alcohol
- The behavioral effects of alcohol - decrease in reaction and decision making capability
- Interaction and combined effects of mixing alcohol with legal and/or illegal drugs
- Identification of possible problem drinkers
- Identifying situation in which server intervention is appropriate
- Handling people in a non-confrontational manner. Communications and support from co-workers is necessary
- Suggested responses by servers to situations involving the service of intoxicated and/or underage persons
- A review of current Tennessee laws, rules, and regulations promulgated by the commission relating to the sale and service of alcoholic beverages and the Alcohol Server Responsibility and Training Act
- A review of appropriate identification including acceptable driver's licenses, military identification, passports, and other identification cards
