The 2017 Wisconsin Act 81 allows cosmetologists, aestheticians, electrologists, and manicurists to obtain licensure by reciprocity without examination by completing a board-approved one-hour laws and rules course instead of the previous 4,000-hour experience requirement. Under Wisconsin Administrative Code Cos 8.02, applicants must hold a current license in good standing from another state, pay the required fee, and complete an approved one-hour course. Licensure may also be granted if Wisconsin has a reciprocity agreement with a state that has substantially equivalent requirements.

How do I Obtain my Wisconsin Cosmetology License?
Under the 2017 Wisconsin Act 81, continuing education is no longer required to renew your barbering or cosmetology-related license. Instead, DSPS will send you a summary of any law or rule changes, and you must confirm you’ve reviewed it to renew. CE is only required if ordered through disciplinary action. For reciprocal licensing, the former 4,000-hour experience requirement has been replaced with a one-hour laws-and-rules course, along with having no disciplinary history or pending investigations.
