Barber Licensing & Exam Prep
If you wish to make a living as a barber in the state of Louisiana, you must first obtain a license. The Louisiana Board of Barber Examiners is the body responsible for regulating barber licenses. The board requires barbers to obtain formal training from an apprenticeship or school as well as pass two exams. See the sections below for more information on the requirements and how to apply.

Barber License
To shave or trim the beard or cut the hair; to style, arrange, dress, curl, wave, straighten, clean, singe, epilate, depilate, shampoo, marcel, chemically restructure, bleach, tint, color or similarly work upon the hair or cranial prosthesis of any person; to give relaxing facial or scalp massage or treatments with oils, creams, or other preparations either by hand or by mechanical appliances.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Louisiana Barber License Requirements- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Is of good moral character with temperate habits
- Pass the state board required barber exams
- Has met one of the following requirements:
- Successful completion of a course of instruction and graduation from a barber college approved by the Louisiana State Board of Barber Examiners
- Holds a current certificate of registration as a cosmetologist issued by the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology
- Successful completion of a Barber Apprenticeship Program registered with the Apprenticeship Council of the Louisiana Department of Labor
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the Louisiana Board of Barber Examiners at 225-925-1701 or visit their website.
The state of Louisiana has reciprocity agreements for equivalent licenses with most state boards. To obtain your license via reciprocity, you must submit a reciprocity application, pay all fees, and have proof of your license sent to the Louisiana Board of Barber Examiners. If you did not take a practical exam to obtain your license, you will be required to take one in order to obtain your Louisiana license.

The first step towards obtaining your barber license is to complete either an apprenticeship program or to attend a barber school. Once you have completed one of these programs, you will be ready to apply for the exam.
The board exams cannot be scheduled or taken until you have completed an approved training program. Barber schools will submit several reports to the Board Office stating that the student has met all requirements to take exam. Upon graduation you will be able to apply for and schedule the exams.

Which exam do I need to take?
The Louisiana Board of Barber Examiners requires applicants to pass an exam in order to obtain a license.
