Cosmetology Continuing Education
Licenses issued by the Washington D.C. Board of Barber and Cosmetology expire every 2 years. Depending on your license type, it may expire in either an even or odd numbered year. License holders are required to complete 6 hours of continuing education from an approved education provider anytime during this period. These renewal requirements apply to all Barber, Cosmetology, or Specialty Cosmetology license holders. More information on these topics can be found in the sections below.

How to I Renew my Washington D.C. Cosmetology License?
In the District of Columbia, you are required to complete 6 hours of board approved continuing education every 2 years in order to renew your license. Below you can find a table of the expiration dates of the licenses that are required to complete CE.

- 2 hours on health, safety, and welfare subjects
- 4 hours in general elective courses, including:
- Courses related to the practice of barbering, cosmetology, and specialty cosmetology
- District laws and regulations
- Ethics and standards of practice
- Occupational health and safety
- HIV / AIDS and communicable and infections disease control
- Product knowledge
- Business
- Management (managers only)
- Education of instruction (instructors only)
