What type of work can be done with the Texas Fire Alarm license?

  • Fire Alarm Technician (FAL)

    A Fire Alarm Technician (FAL) license allows an individual to sell, install, certify, service, and monitor all types of fire alarm and detection systems. However, it does not permit the license holder to engage in any system planning.

  • Fire Alarm Planning Superintendent (APS)

    A Fire Alarm Planning Superintendent (APS) license allows an individual to sell, plan, install, certify, service, and monitor all types of fire alarm and detection systems.

What are the requirements to getting a Texas Fire Alarm license?

  • passing the exam, must be done within one year of the date the application was filed
  • Have a fingerprint background check done if you don’t have one on file with SFMO
  • Submit an Individual Application
  • Provide the name of the company where the employee will be registered. If the company is not licensed with SFMO, the company will need to submit a Fire Alarm Certificate of Registration application
  • Submit the applications, forms, and fees at the same time

    • Have a current Electronic Security Association (ESA) Level III Fire Alarm Designer certification
    • Pass the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level III Fire Alarm Systems test
    • Be a licensed Texas Professional Engineer
  • Passing the exam, must be done within one year of the date the application was filed
  • Have a fingerprint background check done if you don’t have one on file with SFMO
  • Submit an Individual Application

How do I obtain a Texas Fire Alarm license?

To apply for your license, contact the State Fire Marshall's office licensing administration division at 512-676-6800 or visit their website to submit online.

Texas requires 8 hours of continuing education for the Fire Alarm license. Texas has reciprocity agreements with South Carolina and Georgia.
