  • NYC Home Improvement Contractor

    A person or business must have a Home Improvement Contractor license to do construction, repair, remodeling, or other home improvement work to any residential and or building in New York City. Other home improvement work includes, but is not limited to, the construction, replacement, or improvement of basements, driveways, fences, garages, landscaping, patios, porches, sidewalks, swimming pools, terraces, and other improvements to structures or upon land that is next to a home or apartment building.

  • Submit application with all necessary documentation attached:
    • Sales Tax ID # or Application Confirmation #
    • Proof of business address
    • Proof of home address
    • Workers confirmation insurance information
    • Proof of EPA certification
    • Copy of $20,000 surety bond
    • Contractual compliance agreement
  • After approval of your initial application, pass the Home Improvement Exam and pay the exam fee.
  • Schedule fingerprinting appointment and pay licensing fee.

How do I obtain a license?

To apply for your license, contact the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection at (212) 436-0441 or by visiting their website.

While there are no continuing education requirements for Home Improvement Contractors in NYC, all Home Improvement Licenses expire on February 28 of odd years.

Submitt the Basic Application and Supporting Doccuments

The first step in the process is to submit you basic application to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection along with all of the required documentation. Failure to provide all of the necessary information and lead to significant delays in obtaining your license.

PASS THE NYC Home Improvement EXAM

After studying, you will be on your way to passing the required exam (see below). Visit ExamBuilder.com or call (646) 974-8244 to begin this process. Applicants will have 60 days to take and pass their exam after receiving an ID number. Testing centers open 7 days a week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Approval of your basic application is required before scheduling your exam.


After completing all the steps above, it will be time to pay your licensing fee to the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. Applicants must also schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted.
