Electrical Licensing & Exam Prep

New York City requires all Electrical Contractors to obtain a license before any work can take place. These licenses are administered by the New York Department of Buildings.     An NYC Electrician performs the installation, alteration, or repair of any electric wires, wiring apparatus and other appliances used or to be used for the transmission of electricity for electric light, heat, power, signaling, communication, alarm and data transmission.

Examination and Education
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Good Moral Character
  • Applicants must have 7.5 years (10,500 hours) of experience within the last 10 years in the installation, alteration, and repair of wiring and appliances for electric light, heat, and power in buildings or comparable facilities. Experience must be obtained under:
    • The direct supervision of a Department-licensed Master Electrician or Special Electrician.
    • OR

    • For experience outside NYC, under a qualified individual (as determined by the Buildings Commissioner) while employed by a Master Electrician business, or an entity managing buildings with a Special Electrician performing work on specific properties.

    • *Note: No more than 25% of experience may be outside the U.S., unless the Buildings Commissioner finds the foreign licensing system and Electrical Code comparable to U.S. standards.


  • Applicants must meet one of the following experience levels:
    1. Journeyman Electrician:
      • At least 7.5 years (10,500 hours) of experience installing, altering, and repairing wiring and appliances for light, heat, and power in buildings or comparable facilities.
    2. Electrical Engineering Degree:
      • M.S. Degree: At least 2.5 years (3,500 hours) of experience.
      • B.S. Degree: At least 3.5 years (4,900 hours) of experience.
    3. Vocational/Trade School or Apprenticeship:
      • Graduate of a registered program specializing in electrical work and 5.5 years (7,700 hours) of experience.
    4. College/University Courses in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering:
      • Combined coursework and work experience equal 7.5 years (7,000 hours).
      • Up to 50% of curricula years may count, capped at 2.5 years of experience.
    5. Vocational/Trade School Courses:
      • Combined coursework and work experience equal 7.5 years (7,700 hours).
      • Up to 50% of curricula years may count, capped at 2 years of experience.
    6. Electrical Work Inspection Experience:
      • Experience from a government or private inspection agency equals 7.5 years (7,000 hours).
      • Up to 50% of employment years may count, capped at 2.5 years, if obtained within 10 years before application.
      • The 10-year limit does not apply to applicants with 5+ years of experience.
  • Pass the Written and Practical Exams
  • Pass background investigation
  • Pay all applicable fees

How do I pass the exam?

The New York City exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
