Alarm Systems Licensing & Exam Prep
New York City requires all Alarm Contractors to obtain a license before any work can take place. These licenses are administered by the New York Division of Licensing Services. In order to obtain a license, you must meet the experience and exam requirements set by the board. Find more details on how to obtain a license in the sections below.

What type of work can be done with this license?
Fire Alarm License
New York State law (Article 6D of the General Business Law) and Department of State rules (19 NYCRR) defines a security or fire alarm installer as one who installs, services or maintains security or fire alarm systems to detect intrusion, break-in, movement, sound or fire
What are the requirements to getting a license?
New York City Fire Alarm License Requirements
Applicants can qualify for licensure in one of three ways:
Examination and Education
- At least 18 years of age
- Completed and Signed Application
- Application fee paid
- Passed Examination Letter
- Receipt showing proof of electronic fingerprinting by an approved vendor
- Submit evidence of completion of education requirements
- Minimum 81 hours of course study recognized by the Department of State.
- Any additional documentation requested in response to questions on the application
- At least 2 years of experience installing, servicing, or maintaining fire alarm systems (3,500 hours)
- At least 18 years of age
- Completed and Signed Application
- Application fee paid
- Submit proof of experience
- Submit proof of education
- Receipt showing proof of electronic fingerprinting by an approved vendor
Licensed Master Electricians who wish to practice are still required to file with the Department of State one of two ways, and will be required to submit the following:
- Statewide License
- Completed & Signed Application
- Application Fee Paid
- Receipt that provides proof of electronic fingerprinting by approved vendor.
- List of jurisdictions in which you are licensed as a Master Electrician
- Copy of Current Master Electrical License
- Registration within Local Jurisdictions Only
- Completed & Signed Application
- Application Fee Paid
- List of Jurisdictions in which you are licensed as a Master Electrician
- Copy of current Master Electrical License
How do I obtain a license?

Fire Alarm Examination
- Multiple Choice
- Pass/Fail
- Time: 150 minutes
- Topics Include: basic electricity; all standards and codes; control devices; alarm transmissions; motion detection; perimeter systems; access control; CCTV systems; job planning; fire technology; and job safety.
How do I pass the exam?
The New York City exams are open book. The references below are permitted to be tabbed, highlighted, and used during your test! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
