Journeyman/Master Plumber Licensing & Exam Prep
Plumbing licenses can be obtained in either Journeyman or Master classifications. Both licenses require applicants to pass an examination, and the licenses are governed by the State Plumbing Board of Maine. Qualifications to obtain and renew the licenses are detailed below.

What type of work can be done with this license?

Journeyman Plumbing License
A Journeyman Plumber licensed through the State Plumbing Board of Maine, is qualified to install plumbing and drainage under the employment and direction of a master plumber or, not being a master plumber, does plumbing repair work as a regular part-time occupation.

Master Plumbers are permitted to to engage in the business of installing plumbing or plumbing systems.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Journeyman Plumber Requirements- Have at least two years with 4,000 hours of work in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed trainee plumber under the supervision of a licensed Master Plumber
- Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of work in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed Journeyman-in-training under the supervision of a licensed Master Plumber, as long as the work experience is obtained within four years of the date upon which the applicant was issued a Journeyman-in-training license.
- Pass the Journeyman Plumbing exam
Master Plumber Requirements- At least one year with 2,000 hours of work in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed Journeyman Plumber;
- Have four years with 8,000 hours of work in the field of plumbing installations as a licensed trainee plumber under the supervision of a licensed Master Plumber.

How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the State of Maine Plumber’s Examining Board at 225-756-3434 or visit their website.
The state requires up to 5 hours of continuing education prior to renewal. Maine currently has no reciprocity agreements for Plumbing licenses.

Approval is required to sit for the exam, you must apply through the State of Maine Plumber’s Examining Board. This application can be submitted online. Once you are approved, you can take the exam on Prov’s website.

Master Plumbing Exam
- Total Questions: 100
- Time: 3 hours
- CLOSED BOOK
Topics include: General Knowledge; General Regulations; Water Supply Systems Including Backflow Prevention & Water Heaters; Drainage, Waste, Sanitary Venting; Plumbing Fixtures; Traps and Interceptors; Specialty Venting; Indirect Waste; Roof Drainage.
How do I pass the exam?
The Maine exams are closed book.
The exam prep includes math, isometrics, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
