Private Alarm Contractor Licensing & Exam Prep
To work as an private alarm contractor in Illinois, you must first obtain a license. The State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is the body that regulates and issues these licenses. In order to obtain a license, you must first meet the experience requirements and pass the state exams.

Private Alarm Contractor License
Illinois private alarm contractor licenses are issued to individuals performing private alarm work without employees. Registration of an Illinois private alarm contractor license only authorizes private alarm work to be performed by the individual who holds the state license.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Private Alarm Contractor License Requirements- Applicants may apply through one of the following methods:
- Based on Experience
- Based on Education and Experience
- Individuals who have received a 4-year degree or higher in electrical engineering or a related field from a program approved by the Board or a business degree from an accredited college or university shall receive credit for 2 years of experience by submitting the Illinois Education Certification Form (ED) OR Individuals who have successfully completed a national certification program approved by the Board shall receive credit for 1 year of experience by submitting a copy of the national certification program certificate
In lieu of the experience requirements described above, alternative experience may be accepted such as, working as a full-time manager for a private alarm contractor agency licensed in another state, or for a private alarm contractor agency in a state that does not license such agencies, if the experience is substantially equivalent to that gained working for an Illinois license private alarm contractor agency.
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, you must submit your application through the Continental Testing Services website. You can also contact them by phone at 800-359-1313.
The state does not require continuing education prior to each renewal. Also, Illinois has no reciprocity agreements.

Illinois Contractors must pass two examinations: their Trade and Statutes and Rules exam.

How do I pass the exam?
The exam prep includes math, plan reading, study guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
