District of Columbia Contractor License
Contractor Licensing
District of Columbia Contractor licenses are regulated by the District of Columbia District of Columbia Board of Industrial Trades. They govern licensure for Construction trade licenses, including Contractors. To become a contractor in a given trade, licensees must obtain a bond. The amount required depends on the trade. More information is available below.
Unlike most licenses, obtaining a contractor license in the District of Columbia does not require applicants to pass an exam. The rest of this page outlines what is required by the licensing board.

District of Columbia Contractors are licensed to bid on or contract work in the trade for which the contractor or company holds the license.
What are the requirements to getting a license?
Contractor Requirements- Proof of Registration/Certificate of Good Standing
- Local Representative Affidavit
- Designated DC-licensed master tradesperson
- Surety bonds for company and master
Contractor RequirementsApplicants must obtain a bond for the following amounts for the trade for which they are applying:
- Electrical (Regular Voltage):
- Company - $4,000
- Master - $2,000
- Electrical (Low Voltage):
- Company - $2,000
- Master - $1,000
- Elevator:
- Company - $4,000
- Master - not required
- Plumbing/Gasfitting:
- Company - $5,000
- Master - $5,000
- Refrigeration/Air Conditioning:
- Company - $5,000
- Master - $5,000
How do I obtain a license?
To apply for your license, contact the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection at 202-442-4320 or visit the DLCP website to submit online.
District of Columbia does not require continuing education for Contractors. District of Columbia has no reciprocity agreements for Contractors.
