What type of work can be done with this license?

Code Official
Code Official is a person who oversees and administers the Code Enforcement Department in a municipality, county or other local government entity that has lawfully adopted the State Building Code. In this role, the person may typically supervise one or more Deputy Code Officials, and other administrative and technical staff employed by the Code Enforcement Department.

Code Inspector
A Code Inspector's duties include examining construction sites and building locations to ensure they are constructed or maintained in accordance with the State Building Code and the adopted applicable codes relative to the situation. An Inspector may issue a report of the condition or circumstance to the Code Official for further action.
What are the requirements to getting this certification?
Building Inspector 1 Requirements- Option 1
- 3 year's of construction experience (residential)
- ICC B-1 Certification
- Completion of State Certification Program within 1 year
- Option 2
- 3 year's of construction experience (residential) OR High School/GED or Trade School with ICC HSTTP certification
- State SBC-2 Program
- Completion of State Certification Program within 1 year
A person may obtain a credential as a certified Building Inspector 1 by one of the following options:
Building Inspector 2 Requirements- Option 1
- 3 year's of construction experience (residential & commercial)
- ICC B-2 Certification
- Completion of State Certification Program within 1 year (if not previously completed)
- Option 2
- 3 year's of construction experience (residential & commercial) OR High School/GED or Trade School with ICC HSTTP certification
- State SBC-1 Program
- Employed as a B-1 Inspector for a minimum of 1 year
- Completion of State Certification Program within 1 year (if not previously completed)
A person may obtain a credential as a certified Building Inspector 2 by one of the following options:
Building Official Requirements- Option 1
- 5 year's of construction experience (residential & commercial)
- ICC CBO Certification
- Employed as a B-2 Inspector for a minimum of 1 year
- Option 2
- 5 year's of construction experience (residential & commercial)
- Employed as a B-2 Inspector* for a minimum of 3 years OR Employed as a B-1/B-2 Inspector* for a minimum of 6 years
- *Under direct supervision of a Certified Building Official - written verification is required
- {Completion of State Certification Program within 1 year required if CBO supervision is outside of RI}

To apply for your building code license, contact the Rhode Island State Building Office at 401-921-1590 or visit ribcc.ri.gov.

Which exam do I need to take?
The Rhode Island Building Code Exams are administered by either the State or the ICC. To schedule your exam, you must submit an application through the testing agency of your choice.
To schedule your exam, visit the ICC website or email the Office of the Building Code Commissioner.
International Code Council (ICC) Certifications
The International Code Council (ICC) offers multiple types of code inspector certifications, each require an exam. We offer courses for all types of ICC certifications. The following ICC certifications are accepted by the Rhode Island DHCD to fulfill the requirements for Building Code Enforcement Officer:
- ICC MM - Management Module
- ICC MG - Legal Module
- ICC BC - Building Codes and Standards Module

- State SBC-2 Program
- State SBC-1 Program
How do I pass the exam?
The exam prep includes math, geometry, highlighting guides covering the topics your exam is based on, practice questions for each references, and unlimited attempts on our "test simulation".
