Certified Residential Electrical Inspector and Electrical Specialty Code Inspector in Oregon
  • Residential Electrical Inspector

    Also known as the One-and-Two Family Dwelling Electrical Inspector, the Residential Electrical Inspectors may conduct inspections of: electrical work regulated by the Oregon Residential Specialty Code (including the Low-Rise Residential Dwelling Code), work regulated by the Oregon Manufactured Dwelling Installation Specialty Code, the provisions of OAR chapter 918, division 500, the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards 24 CFR 3280 and 3282, and any portion (structural and electrical) of a solar photovoltaic installation up to 25 kilowatts.

  • Electrical Specialty Code Inspector

    Certified Oregon Electrical Specialty Code Inspectors may perform the following: inspect electrical installations regulated by the Oregon Electrical Specialty Code, inspect electrical installations regulated by the Oregon Residential Specialty Code, conduct electrical plan reviews as provided in OAR 918-311-0040, and inspect any portion (structural and electrical) of a solar photovoltaic installation up to 25 kilowatts.

The Residential Electrical Inspector Certification can be obtained through either division examination or division training:


  • Division Examination
  • Division Training
    • Pay applicable fees for course enrollment and exam
    • Complete the Residential Electrical Inspector (CAE) course
    • Pass the State Certification Exam: Residential Electrical Inspector (CAE) certification exam

    Experience Requirements


  • To qualify for this certification, a person must have one of the following:
    • Be an Oregon journey-level electrician
    • Have two years experience as an Oregon limited residential or general journey-level electrician
    • Have a certificate of completion from an apprenticeship program meeting the equivalency requirements of OAR 918-282-0170, plus two years experience as a licensed journey-level electrician
    • 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours education and training in electrical engineering, which includes designing and installing electrical systems, through a college or community college
    • Be a licensed journey-level electrician and have four years experience as a licensed journey-level electrician
    • Two years of experience as an electrical inspector in another jurisdiction inspecting electrical installations in commercial or residential structures for compliance with a recognized code for electrical installations
    • Complete the division's board-approved practicum
    • Successfully pass the division's certification examination

    The Electrical Specialty Code Inspector Certification can be obtained through division examination:


  • Division Examination
  • Division Training
    • Pay applicable fees for course enrollment and exam
    • Complete the Electrical Specialty Code Inspector (EI) course
    • Pass the State Certification Exam: Electrical Specialty Code Inspector (EI) certification exam

    Experience Requirements


  • To qualify for this certification, a person must have one of the following:
    • Oregon Journey-Level Experience:
      • Four years of employment and experience as a licensed Oregon jouney-level electrician; or
      • Two years of employment and experience as a licensed Oregon journey-level electrician, plus successful completion of the division's board-approved practicum
    • Out-of-State Journey-Level Experience:
      • A certificate of completion from an apprenticeship program meeting the equivalency requirements of OAR 918-282-0170, plus four years experience as a journey-level electrician working on commercial, industrial, or multifamily structures; or
      • Be a licensed journey-level electrician, plus eight years experience as a licensed journey-level electrician working on commercial, industrial, or multifamily structures, plus successful completion of the division's board approved commercial Electrical inspector practicum
    • Out-of-State Inspection Experience
      • Ten years work experience in the inspection of electrical installations of which at least five years is of commercial, industrial, or multifamily structures as a certified inspector possessing a nationally recognized certification or its equivalent; or
      • Eight years work experience in the inspection of electrical installations which at least four years is of commercial, industrial, or multifamily structures as a certified inspector possessing a nationally recognized certification or its equivalent, plus successful completion of the division's board-approved commercial Electrical inspector practicum
    • Engineering Experience
      • A four-year Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, plus two years approved experience in design, inspection, or supervision of installations covered by the National Electrical Code or the Oregon Electrical Specialty Code; or
      • Be a certified professional electrical engineer

    How do I obtain a certification?

    To apply for your Residential Electrical Inspector and Electrical Specialty Code Inspector certification, contact the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services at 503-387-7974 or visit their website.

    Certified code enforcement officers in Oregon are required to complete code change courses and high-priority training when needed. The division may determine that a code change course is not required if a given code was not significantly changed or the division otherwise determined a code change course is unnecessary. Licenses are to be renewed every three years (2023, 2026, 2029, etc.).
