The 2017 Wisconsin Act 81 eliminates mandatory continuing education for license renewal and instead requires DSPS to provide a summary of law and rule changes, which licensees must review to renew. The Act also removes the previous requirement of 4,000 hours of experience for reciprocal licensing, replacing it with a one-hour laws-and-rules course. A reciprocal license may be issued if the applicant completes this course, has no disciplinary history in another state, and is not currently under investigation.

How do I Renew my Wisconsin Cosmetology License?
Under the 2017 Wisconsin Act 81, continuing education is no longer required to renew your barbering or cosmetology-related license. Instead, DSPS will send you a summary of any law or rule changes, and you must confirm you’ve reviewed it to renew. CE is only required if ordered through disciplinary action. For reciprocal licensing, the former 4,000-hour experience requirement has been replaced with a one-hour laws-and-rules course, along with having no disciplinary history or pending investigations.
