Cosmetology Continuing Education
Individual cosmetology licenses in Texas expire every two years from when the license was issued. Any time during this period, license holders are required to complete four hours of continuing education from an approved education provider. The topics of the education are set by the board and must comply with their requirements. More information on these topics can be found in the sections below.

What courses are available for me to take online?
Texas Cosmetology CE (4 Hours)
- This online course covers 1 hour of sanitation laws and 3 hours of other cosmetology related topics, including:

Primarily for students who have held a license for at least 15 years:
- These students will only need to complete one hour of department-approved continuing education in sanitation
- Additional three hours of continuing education will be waived and is not be required for these students.

How to I Renew my Texas Cosmetology License?
In Texas, Cosmetology licenses expire 2 years after the initial date of licensure. You are required to complete 4 hours of state approved continuing education in order to renew your license.

What are the required topics and hours for my license?
How Many Hours?
- 4 total hours of continuing education:
- One (1) hour on sanitation
- One (1) hour on human trafficking prevention for renewals on or after September 1, 2025, which at a minimum must include information on:
- activities commonly associated with human trafficking;
- recognition of potential victims of human trafficking; and
- methods for assisting victims of human trafficking, including how to report human trafficking; and
- The remaining two (2) hours may cover any of the following topics, including but not limited to:
- Mental heath awareness
- Sanitation
- Human trafficking
- Anatomy and physiology
- Diseases and disorders of the skin, scalp, hair and nails
- Chemistry (hair coloring, chemical waving, and relaxing)
- Bacteriology, sterilization and sanitation, health, safety, and first aid
- Tools and equipment
- Hair care and related theory
- Skin care and related theory
- Nail care and related theory
- Business skills and establishment management
- Face and neck massage and treatments
- Customer service and professional ethics
- A licensee who is at least 65 or older and has held a license for 15 or more years is only required to complete:
- 1 hour of sanitation
