There is a science and an art to the practice of cosmetology, as well as an element of caring for others. This unique combination of factors makes it an exciting and attractive career for many people.  

Whether you love styling hair, providing skin care treatments, or giving clients a glow-up with makeup or nails, you’ll need a cosmetology license from the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners to practice in the state. 

To obtain a cosmetology license, you must first complete 1,500 hours of education at a board-approved cosmetic art school and graduate. You must then pass a state board exam to prove your knowledge and fitness to practice cosmetology. 

Once you have your license, you’ll also have to renew it periodically. What is involved in the renewal process, and what happens if you fail to renew your license on time? 

Renewing Your Cosmetology License

Whether you’re a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, natural hair care specialist, manicurist, or teacher, the state of North Carolina requires you to renew your license every three years. Before you can renew your license, you must complete 24 hours of board-approved continuing education (CE), or eight hours per year over the three years, including topics set by the board. 

An approved 8-hour course will include information on the following topics: 

• Sanitation and sterilization 
• Sexual harassment 
• Hair cutting basics 
• Domestic violence awareness 
• Diseases and disorders of the scalp 

At least half of your required CE hours must pertain to the cosmetic art licensure field and could include activities like: 

• Online educational courses 
• Educational videos/tutorials 
• Learning new skills from another professional 
• Participating in practical, hands-on classes 

There are exemptions from required CE. If you’ve been a practicing cosmetologist for 20 or more years or you’re over the age of 60 and have 10 years of cosmetology experience, you may be eligible for an exemption. You must submit an exemption application when you apply for license renewal. 

The license renewal period falls between July 1 and October 1 annually. You must submit your application and proof of completed CE during this time frame if you don’t want your license to expire. 

The Penalties for License Expiration

If your cosmetology license has expired and you haven’t requested inactive status, you will have to retake state licensing exams to reinstate it, which can be costly and time-consuming.  

You are not legally allowed to continue practicing without a valid license. Doing so could result in fines, license suspension or revocation, and even potential lawsuits.
