If you’re interested in obtaining your HVAC contractor license in Ohio, you must be familiar with the requirements and regulations the state has put forth for candidates. Before you can bid on or contract any type of HVAC work on your own, you must obtain this license and renew it annually or at least every three years. To renew, HVAC contractors must complete approved continuing education

To earn your license, you must submit a completed application and all required supplemental materials. You will also need to get approval from the state board to take the tests. Then you must pass them. Only then will you be able to obtain the professional Ohio HVAC contractor license.

What Are the Requirements for Getting an Ohio HVAC Contractor License?

HVAC contractors in Ohio can legally install, maintain, fabricate, extend, alter, or repair any and all components of HVAC systems. This includes central heating, air conditioning, and ventilation. It also includes ductwork within a complete system, in addition to all insulation, apparatus, piping vessels, and appurtenances used in those systems.

To receive an HVAC contractor license, you must comply with the following requirements.

Proof of Experience

When you submit your application to the state board, you must also send proof of your work or education. The state requires proof of the last five years of your working as a tradesperson under a state-licensed contractor. This experience must have been performing permittable work.

Alternatively, you can submit proof that you are a registered engineer in Ohio with three years of business experience in the HVAC trade and construction industry.

Finally, you must supply a copy of one permit for each of the last five years your licensed contractor employer obtained and under which you worked.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the completed application and experience/education requirements, you will need to submit proof of an insurance policy with a minimum liability of $500,000. 

You must pass the Ohio HVAC and Business & Law exams. Requirements also include completing a state and federal background check before sitting for the state examinations.

Applicants are required to contact the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCLIB) to begin the application process. To sit for the exam, you must submit all required materials to the OCLIB and wait for your application to be approved. Once it is approved, the state will contact you with pre-approval information for the exams.

The Ohio HVAC Licensure Exams

You must fully prepare for the two exams you will take to avoid unnecessary delays in obtaining your Ohio license. 

The HVAC Contractor Exam contains 100 questions; you will have four hours to complete it. You must score a 70% to pass, and this exam is open-book. 

The Ohio Business and Law Exam has 50 questions; again, you must get 70% of the questions correct. You will be given two hours to complete this exam, which is also open-book.
