The short answer to this question is yes. You do need a license to perform roofing work in Kansas. However , Kansas handles professional contractor licensing differently than most other states, and this includes the licensing requirements for roofing professionals.

The state itself does not directly administer licenses to roofing contractors. Professionals are required to first obtain a Roofing Contractor Registration Certificate from the Kansas attorney general.

Only after you’ve received this certificate can you get a license through your local jurisdiction, county, or city. Once you have the attorney general’s approval to apply for a license, then you need the license itself.

Since roofing contractor licenses are given at a county or local level instead of a state level, there are different requirements and stipulations depending on the area in which a contractor will work. Here, we will go over some information from Sedgwick County, Douglas County, Johnson County, and Shawnee County.

What Kind of Work Can I Do with a KS Roofing License?

A professional who holds this type of license is lawfully able to work on the roof of any structure or building. A roofing license also covers:

  • Repair, replacement, or installation of roof sheathing
  • Application, installation, or repair of damp-proofing materials for roofs
  • Application, repair, or installation of roof weather-proofing
  • Installation of insulation panels or systems for roofs
  • Repair of structural damage to an existing roof support system
  • Installation of a skylight

A Kansas roofing license allows you to perform any work related to roof installation, roof repair, and roofing materials.

Obtaining Your Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Certificate

Your first step is to obtain your registration certificate from the Kansas state attorney general. To do so, you will need to submit your license application and pay all the associated fees.

At that same time, you must provide a certificate of worker’s compensation insurance, a certificate of liability insurance (of no less than $500,000 coverage), and a certificate of a current tax clearance or a letter from the state’s Department of Revenue.

Once you have this certificate, the different rules for licensure from county to county apply. No matter where you will be working, you will likely need the basics — proof of general liability and worker’s compensation insurance, your photo ID, and a completed application with the application fee. In many counties, you may also have to have one of these two qualifications:

  • A passing score of no lower than 75% on the ICC (KGP) Kansas Standard Roofing Contractor Exam
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, or construction science from an ACCE-accredited or ABET-accredited school or program

In some counties, applicants can have an equivalent contractor license from another city, county, or jurisdiction with which the city has reciprocity.
