So you’re ready to start working on your first construction project. It’s an exciting time! But before you break ground, it’s important to cross your t’s and dot your i’s.

We know that time is money. So you’ll want to get started as soon as possible. RocketCert has all of the information you need to get on your way. First on the checklist is your Virginia contractor’s license.

The DPOR (Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation) breaks down contractor licensing into three categories:

  1. Class A
  2. Class B
  3. Class C

To perform licensed work in the state of Virginia, you’ll need at least one of these license types.

Do You Need an Expedited Class A License?

The license types are defined by the experience of the contractor and the cost of the project. Knowing the scope of the potential projects you’ll work on will help you determine which type of license you need.

You need 5-years of experience to obtain a Class A license, and then you can work on projects valued at $120,000 or more.

For a Class B license, you need 3-years of experience to work on projects valued between $10,000 and $120,000. Class C licenses require 2-years of experience and allow you to work on projects valued between $1,000 and $10,000.

Those are the three main license types offered by our state. Usually, the application requires 30 days for processing. But if you are looking for quicker results, there is one other option to consider: an expedited Class A license. Keep reading to learn more.

Are You Eligible?

The only license type that you can expedite is Class A. This type covers projects valued at $120,000 and more. To determine whether you are eligible for an expedited Class A license, answer these questions:

  1. Can you demonstrate that your company’s net worth exceeds $45,000.00?
  2. Can you provide photo identification for each employee listed on the application?
  3. Have you passed the Class A Contractor exam?
  4. Can you provide proof of your 5-years of experience?
  5. Are you and your employees clear of adverse financial histories, criminal convictions, and disciplinary actions?

If you answered yes to all five questions, you are eligible for an expedited Class A license.

What Will it Cost You?

In addition to your initial application fees, you will need to pay an extra $250.00. Keep in mind that these fees are nonrefundable and must be paid at the time of application.

How Long Will it Take?

Completed applications require two business days of processing from the date of submission. If you submit your application after 4:45 PM on a business day, the 2-day period starts at 8:15 AM on the next business day.

How Do You Get Started?

Remember that to receive your Class A license, expedited or not, you must pass the contractor’s exam.
