Like most states, Arizona requires general contractors to obtain and maintain licensure with the state. The purpose of this licensure process is to ensure that contractors/builders are qualified to provide the work that they are accepting. The licensure process and exam are standardized to create uniformity throughout the state.
A secondary benefit of the standardized licensing procedures is that it protects prospective clients from fraudulent work. Becoming a licensed contractor will create many opportunities for you to take on new work and seek gainful employment because the demand for general contractors is high throughout the state.
What Can I Do with the License?
The type of work that you can perform with your license will depend on which license you obtain. Currently, there are two different general contractor’s licenses available in the state of Arizona.
The first type is known as a Commercial General Contractor License or B-1 license. When you obtain this type of license, you can alter, repair, or construct any commercial structure. You can also supervise any of the above activities either directly or indirectly.
The second type of license is referred to as a Dual Building Contractor License or KB-1. This license grants you the same authorization as the B-1 License. In addition, you can also perform work covered by the general residential contractor’s license. This is a great option if you plan on performing commercial and residential work.
License Requirements
Arizona has plainly laid out its licensing requirements, which makes the process of applying for and obtaining licensure relatively simple. The first step in obtaining licensure is to study for the exam.
Once you are ready, you will need to contact PSI, which is the contractor’s exam provider for the state of Arizona. You will have to pass the general commercial exam and an Arizona statutes and rules exam.
The exams will be held at one of the numerous testing sites throughout the state. After passing the exams, you can apply for licensure in the state. It is vital that you select the appropriate exam for your desired license.
In addition to passing the exam, you will need to provide the state with proof that you have four years of relevant experience. This can include managerial experience in a related field. Hands-on experience as a laborer/apprentice is also acceptable for your general contractor’s license.
Exam Info
As mentioned above, there are two separate exams that you will have to take. The general commercial and dual-building contractor’s exams consist of 100 total questions each. You will have four hours to complete the exam. It covers topics such as:
In order to pass, you need a score of 70% or better. This exam is partially open book. You can have materials that pertain to OSHA standards and building codes, which may be referenced during your test.
The Arizona statutes and rules exam is also partially open book. The test consists of 80 questions and also requires a cumulative score of 70% or better. You will have 180 minutes to complete it.
