In the state of Kentucky, becoming an electrical contractor entails more than just taking an electrical exam and getting a permit to work. If you are wanting to become an electrical contractor, you are actually required to provide proof of six full years of certified and verified experience in the industry. You will also need to pass the Kentucky Business and Law Exam and the Kentucky Master Electrical Exam. The Kentucky Business and Law Exam is required due to the amount of business-oriented work that being a contractor entails. Plus, when you are a licensed electrical contractor in the state of Kentucky, you must hire at least one master electrician to work with you. Therefore, having a vast knowledge of business, law, taxes, government, etc. is essential for working as an electrical contractor.

When you are attempting to take the Kentucky Master Electrical Exam, you do not need to be preapproved by anyone or any company. You will simply register online through Pearson VUE. Be sure you are taking the Kentucky specific exam which will be identified as “701 Kentucky Standard Master Electrician.” This exam will cost $100 to take. You will have a time limit of 5 hours to answer 100 questions, so take your time!

Fortunately, you are able to refer to these two certain informational materials to guide you through this exam: the 2017 National Electrical Code and Ugly’s Electrical Reference. Ugly’s Electrical Reference can be any edition that you have access to. The areas of content you should be prepared to answer questions on are: services and service equipment, feeders, control devices, equipment and other devices, wiring methods and materials, branch circuits and conductors, motors and generators, special occupancies, equipment, and conditions. You should be prepared for any other questions on the general knowledge of the industry, as well.

When you have completed and passed your exams, you can apply for your license. This will require a completed application and the fulfillment of an application fee of $200. Send the application and money to the Department of Housing, Building, and Construction. In order to maintain your electrical contractor license in the state of Kentucky, you must complete 6 hours of continuing education.
