In Virginia, electrical inspectors must hold a Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) certification through the Virginia Building Code Academy (VBCA). You can specialize in either residential or commercial inspections, or you can get multiple certifications.

Experience Requirements and Application

You'll need to choose which organization you're going to take your exams with. The ICC hosts the E1 and E2 exams, which are focused on electrical inspection provisions. Both remote and in-person testing options are available, so there is some flexibility in scheduling your licensing exam.

The NCPCCI exams include 2A and 2B, which cover residential and general electrical topics, respectively. These exams are also available both in-person and online. There aren't any prequalifications to take the NCPCCI exams, but you'll still need to meet any other licensing requirements for your application.

After You Pass Your Exams

After passing your exams, you should move forward with paperwork right away. Submit your completed certification application to the DHCD through the VBCA online registration system. You'll be able to attach proof of required coursework and passing exam scores. Always keep copies for your own records in case of any issues.

Once you've received your license, you'll have to meet continuing education (CE) requirements every two years to maintain it. The DHCD mandates 16 hours of relevant CE over every renewal period. You may also need to undergo mandatory code-cycle training.

You can claim up to eight hours on a specific topic each cycle. This requirement ensures that electrical inspectors study a diverse range of topics. Plan your ongoing training carefully to avoid any delays in renewing your license.
