The state also issues one-year provisional unlimited and residential licenses that allow professionals to work as they meet the qualifications to obtain a full license. Provisional licenses may not be renewed.

Qualifications for Licensure

City and county electrical inspectors must be familiar with the electrical code and have 10 years of practical experience in electrical work as a contractor, engineer, or Class A journeyman electrician.

To obtain a license, you must also pass national testing associated with your preferred classification, administered by the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors. This could include the 2A and 2B exams.

The 2A Electrical Inspector One- and Two-Family Dwellings Exam consists of 50 questions covering the following topics:

• Cabinets, panelboards, switchboards, boxes, and conduit bodies
• Calculations of load
• Calculations of wire size
• Conductors and overcurrent protection on the load side of service
• Lighting and utilization equipment
• Service equipment and conductors on the supply side of service
• Special installations or constructions
• Switches, disconnects, and controllers
• Wiring methods

This open-book test references the International Residential Code and the NFPA 70 National Electric Code. The 2B Electrical General Exam features 50 questions on the same topics as the 2A exam, as well as:

• Generators other than dwellings
• Motors other than dwellings
• Special occupancies

This open-book text references the NFPA 70 National Electric Code. You will have two hours to complete each exam, and you must answer a minimum of 70% of the questions correctly to pass.
