Fire is among the most destructive forces known to man, and without proper protection in place, it can reduce buildings to rubble and ash. Fire codes are designed to set rules and standards for fire safety in the building industry, but they can only be successful if they’re enforced. 

This is where fire inspectors come into play. These professionals are responsible for inspecting buildings and systems to ensure code compliance and safe and habitable structures. 

If you’re interested in a career in fire safety, you must first obtain a license from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance State Fire Marshal's Office. What are the requirements to obtain this license? 

What Does a Fire Inspector Do? 

Fire inspectors visit established structures or new construction sites to conduct inspections, identify potential hazards, generate reports, and enforce codes.  

They may inspect components like fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and other safety systems for compliance with applicable fire codes, including local, state, and international fire codes.  

As a licensed fire inspector, you must be able to assess both fire protection systems and building construction, as well as overall emergency planning procedures. 

Requirements to Obtain a License 

There are several requirements you must meet before you can obtain a fire inspector license in Tennessee.  

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or GED certificate. There are no experience requirements to become a licensed fire inspector, although previous experience or knowledge of the construction industry can be helpful in this profession. 

You are required to successfully complete a recognized training course that covers the specialty in which you seek certification and pass an examination from a professional building code organization, such as the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI).  

NCPCCI testing required for a fire inspector license includes the 3B Fire Protection General Exam and 3C Fire Protection Plan Review Exam. 

NCPCCI Exams 

The NCPCCI 3B Fire Protection General Exam covers topics like building structure and fire protection systems. It references the International Building Code, the NFPA 13 – Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, and the NFPA 72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. 

The 3C Fire Protection Plan Review Exam also covers building structure and fire protection systems, referencing the same resources as the 3B exam but with a focus on plan review.  

Both tests are open-book and feature 50 questions. You must answer a minimum of 70% of the questions on NCPCCI exams correctly to pass. You will have two hours to complete each exam.
