In the state of Massachusetts, licensed systems technicians and contractors are allowed to perform low-voltage systems work. For example, this license authorizes you to work on fire alarms, communication systems, and security solutions. The contractor license also authorizes you to work as a firm, corporation, or individual within Massachusetts, meaning you’ll enjoy greater autonomy.

Are you interested in obtaining one of these licenses? Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Get Your Systems Technician License

The systems technician license is required to be eligible for a systems contractor certification. To be eligible for a systems technician license, you must:

  • Complete at least 4,000 hours of systems work over at least two years
  • Prove that the work was performed under the supervision of a licensed Massachusetts systems contractor or technician
  • Provide proof of at least 300 hours of uninterrupted electrical education through an approved school
  • Possess a high school diploma
  • Pass the Systems Technician (Part I & II) Exams with a score of 70% or higher

Before you sit for the exam, you must submit an application to the state board. The board will verify your education and work experience. If you meet these requirements, the state will provide you with an exam date and time.

Next, you’ll need to set yourself up for success by investing in a comprehensive exam prep bundle. Study the materials and complete practice exam questions to test your knowledge. After you pass your exam, all you’ll need to do is apply for your license.

Part I of the exam consists of 60 questions. You’ll have 120 minutes to complete the open-book exam. Part II consists of 30 questions, and you’ll have 60 minutes to complete it. It is also open book.

How to Get Your Systems Contractor License

To be eligible for a systems contractor license, you must:

  • Hold a Massachusetts systems technician license for at least one year
  • Provide proof that you have been working in the systems trade during that time
  • Complete 75 hours of uninterrupted classroom instruction
  • Pass the Systems Contractor (Part I & II) Exams with a score of 70% or higher

The Systems Contractor Exam is more rigorous than the technician exam. Part I consists of 70 questions. You’ll have 180 minutes to complete the open-book exam. Part II focuses on business and law. It includes 50 questions and lasts 120 minutes. It is also open book.

As with the technician exam, the Systems Contractor Exam requires pre-approval from the state board. Submit your application and proof that you meet the education/work requirements. Once approved, you will be assigned an exam date and time.
