Entering a skilled trade like contracting is a great way to build a career without necessarily taking on the time and expense of obtaining a traditional college degree. For this trade, you can learn on the job and advance your career by obtaining different licenses from the Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB).
If you’re interested in offering remodeling and improvement services for existing residential structures like detached, single-family residences or single-family residential units (within structures of no more than three stories aboveground and one below), a B-7 residential remodeler license will help you reach your goals. What are the requirements to obtain this license?
There are seven different subclassifications for general building (B) contractor licenses in Nevada, including the B-7 license for residential remodelers.
Before you can obtain a B license, you must first complete at least four years of experience (within 10 years before applying for a license) as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee, or contractor within your preferred classification.
You must also provide financial statements as required for the scope of work you plan to complete. Licenses could allow for monetary limit categories as low as $25,000 or less per project and as high as $1,000,000 or more.
Proof of insurance (industrial, workers’ compensation) and a cash deposit or surety bond are also required (amount to be determined by the NSCB), along with a background check. You must also have a qualifying party at your business.
Finally, you are required to pass state exams, including a trade exam and the Contractor Management Survey Exam.
You must pass two open-book exams to qualify for a B-7 license. The Contractor Management Survey Exam consists of 60 questions on topics like:
You will have 120 minutes to complete the exam, and you must answer at least 45 questions (75%) correctly to pass. This test also includes three non-scored questions that you will have six additional minutes to answer (for a total of 126 minutes). You must also take a trade exam.
The B-7 Residential Remodeling Exam features 60 questions about subjects like:
You will have two hours to complete this exam, and you must answer at least 42 questions (70%) correctly to pass.
As a working professional, you know how important it is to pass state exams on the first try. The right exam prep program will accommodate your busy schedule with 24/7 online access that allows for self-paced learning. Courses developed by industry experts and educators are ideal.
