Before you can legally work in roofing, sheet metal, and siding, however, you’ll have to obtain a license from the Mississippi State Board of Contractors. What are the requirements to get a license? 

General Requirements for a Roofing, Sheet Metal, & Siding License 

To qualify for a license, you must submit an application that includes several documents, starting with proof of relevant experience. This consists of a listing of all completed roofing projects performed in the last three years. 

You must also provide three letters of reference, including one from a financial institution and two from sources you have worked with on relevant projects. Further, you must submit a financial statement that has been reviewed or audited by a CPA within the last 12 months. 

Next, you must show proof of insurance, including general liability coverage and workers’ compensation. Finally, corporations, LLCs, and LLPs are required to submit a certificate proving good standing with the Mississippi Secretary of State. 

Once you have supplied these documents, you’ll have to pass state exams to prove competency. There are two exams you must pass — the Roofing, Sheet Metal, & Siding (trade) Exam and the Mississippi Law and Business Management Exam. 

What to Expect From State Exams 

The state exams to obtain a roofing license are open-book. The Roofing, Sheet Metal, & Siding Exam includes 60 questions about the following topics: 

• Roofing substrates 
• Steep roofing 
• Roofing repairs 
• Elastomeric roofing 
• Built-up bituminous roofing 
• Siding general knowledge 
• Sheet metal and flashing 
• Safety 

You will have two hours to complete the test, and you must answer at least 42 questions (70%) correctly to pass.  

The Law and Business Management Exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions covering: 

• Licensing 
• Estimating and bidding 
• Lien law 
• Financial management 
• Tax laws 
• Labor laws 
• Project management 
• Contracts 
• Business organization 
• Risk management 
• Environmental and safety regulations 

You will have two hours to complete the exam, and you must answer a minimum of 35 questions (70%) correctly to pass.
