Eco-friendly building has expanded dramatically in recent years as more consumers, commercial interests, developers, and investors recognize the importance of protecting the planet. Changing laws and government incentives have helped to speed this expansion in green building.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used certification program for sustainable building professionals. A LEED credential opens up opportunities in a range of skilled trades. What credentials are available, and what benefits can you expect from earning one?

LEED Credentials to Consider

Over 200,000 building professionals have already earned LEED credentials that highlight their knowledge and proficiency in sustainable building design, construction, and operations. With proper credentials, you could become a:

  • LEED Green Associate
  • LEED Advanced Professional (AP) With Specialty
  • LEED Fellow
  • LEED Green Rater
  • LEED Classroom Professional

LEED Green Associates have demonstrated competency in green building principles, while advanced professionals have expertise in one or more specific areas of green building. Each of these credentials requires an exam.

As a LEED AP with Specialty, you may be eligible to become a LEED Fellow by demonstrating leadership, commitment, service, and advocacy in sustainable building. You must have 10 years of experience in green building and be nominated by industry peers to gain this distinction.

LEED Green Raters are approved by a third party, Green Business Certification Inc., based on their demonstrated expertise and experience.

Certified LEED Green Classroom Professionals are K–12 teachers and school staff who possess the knowledge needed to create and maintain healthy and sustainable school environments.

How to Obtain LEED Credentials

To become a credentialed green associate, you must pass the LEED Green Associate Exam, which features 100 questions. You may take the exam at a Prometric testing center or remotely via an online proctored exam, and you will have two hours to complete it.

In order to keep your credential, you must complete 15 hours of continuing education within the two years after passing the exam.

Once you are a LEED Green Associate, you can take the LEED AP with Specialty Exam, or you may take a combined exam. Specialties include:

  • LEED AP Building Design and Construction (LEED AP BD+C)
  • LEED AP Operations and Maintenance (LEED AP O+M)
  • LEED AP Interior Design and Construction (LEED AP ID+C)
  • LEED AP Neighborhood Development (LEED AP ND)
  • LEED AP Homes

Professionals with a LEED AP with Specialty certificate are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education within two years of passing the exam.

LEED Green Raters must hold a LEED AP BD+C or AP homes credential and complete additional training. LEED Green Classroom Professionals need only complete an online course to obtain certification.

Benefits of Choosing a Sustainable Career Path

Why should you consider adding a LEED credential to your other professional certifications or licenses?

Green building is a growing field with a high demand for professionals who have proven their dedication to more sustainable practices. A LEED credential not only makes you more marketable but also allows you to contribute to a safer and healthier future for the planet and all its inhabitants.
