How Can I Get My Low Voltage License in Alabama? 

Obtaining your low-voltage license in the state of Alabama requires taking an exam to prove your knowledge and skills. You will first need prior approval from the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board to sit for the exam, which you can obtain after submitting a signed and notarized application. 

Keep in mind that applicants will need to furnish proof of extensive experience in the field before sitting for the exam. Currently, Alabama requires 8,000 hours of experience designing, planning, and supervising electrical construction and installation projects. You may also submit proof of one year of electrical education in lieu of 2,000 of those hours.  

Once the application is approved, all applicants must pass two exams. The 120-minute open-book Business Law Exam consists of 50 questions on topics such as: 

• Estimates and bids 
• Payroll and taxes 
• Liens and other financial issues 
• Personnel and labor 
• Contracts 
• Risk management 
• Environmental issues 
• Safety recordkeeping 

The open-book Low Voltage Special Systems Exam has the same time constraints and number of questions. 

This exam covers topics like: 

• Grounding and bonding 
• Conductors 
• Electrical power conditioning 
• Intrusion detection and alarms 
• Computer and data systems 
• CCTV, CATV, and MATV systems 
• Applied systems design
