If you want to start a career as a mechanical contractor in Mississippi, you’ll need to obtain the correct state license. Here’s a comprehensive guide to obtaining your Mississippi mechanical contractor license.

The Basic License Requirements

The Mississippi State Board of Contractors (MSBOC) is responsible for licensing mechanical contractors. You’ll need this license to undertake commercial projects or public projects that involve over $50,000 of work. The MSBOC includes both material and installation costs in the calculation.

Are You Eligible to Apply?

If you want to become a mechanical contractor in Mississippi, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Provide 3 reference letters
  • List all of your completed and incomplete projects over the previous 3 years
  • Submit a certificate of insurance that lists MSBOC as a certificate holder
  • Submit a certificate of workers’ comp coverage (if you have 5 or more employees)
  • Submit proof of good standing with the Secretary of State (if you have an LLC, LLP, or corporation)

The MSBOC requires that one reference letter be from a financial institution. The other two letters can be from any entity or individual that you have worked for or with on construction projects.

How Many Exams Are There, and What Do They Cover?

You’ll have to take two separate exams to become a licensed mechanical contractor in Mississippi. The first is the Mississippi Law and Business Management exam. It covers topics such as:

  • Estimating and bidding
  • Labor laws
  • Project management
  • Environmental and safety issues
  • Licensing
  • Lien law
  • Financial management

The exam includes 50 questions and requires a score of 70% (35 correct answers) to pass. You’ll have 120 minutes to complete the open-book exam.

Once you pass that exam and meet all other eligibility requirements, you can sit for the Mechanical Contractor exam. This test consists of 100 questions and is four hours long. You must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the open book exam to pass. It covers topics such as:

  • Gas systems
  • Cleanouts
  • Boilers and hydronic heating
  • Sheet metal and ducts
  • Water supply
  • Traps and interceptors
  • General plumbing regulations
  • Heating and cooling principles
  • Adjusting and balancing

This is not a comprehensive list. You can reach out to an online test prep service to learn which topics you’ll need to master.

Application Process

After you gather all of the documents listed above and pass your exams, it’s time to apply for your license. You’ll also need to pay a fee to begin the application process. The MSBOC will notify you when your license has been approved and activated.
