Every state has different standards, requirements, and testing associated with obtaining licenses for skilled trades. As an electrician, you must have adequate education and experience to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment. The license you hold will determine the type of work you do. 

The International Code Council (ICC) is an organization that not only develops codes and standards for construction trades but also offers exams to determine professional competency.  

Some states and municipalities accept ICC tests in place of state testing for licensure, potentially saving you time and money if your work takes you to nearby cities and states. You will still have to meet other state requirements for education, experience, insurance, and so on before you can obtain a license. 

The F-series electrical exams are based on the 2014 version of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70, also known as the National Electrical Code (NEC).

F16 Master Electrician Exam

The F16 Master Electrician Exam is an open-book test featuring 100 questions on a broad range of topics, including: 

• General knowledge and plan reading 
• Services and service equipment 
• Feeders 
• Branch circuit and conductors 
• Wiring methods and materials 
• Equipment and devices 
• Control devices 
• Motors and generators 
• Special occupancies, equipment, and conditions 

You will have five hours to complete the exam, and you must answer at least 75 questions correctly to pass. 

F17 Journeyman Electrician Exam

The F17 Journeyman Electrician Exam covers many of the same topics as the F16 exam but with distinctive questions for the Journeyman class, including: 

• General knowledge 
• Services and service equipment 
• Feeders 
• Branch circuit and conductors 
• Wiring methods and materials 
• Equipment and devices 
• Control devices 
• Motors and generators 
• Special occupancies, equipment, and conditions 

This open-book test has 80 questions. You must answer a minimum of 56 correctly to pass. You will have four hours to complete the exam. 

F18 Residential Electrician Exam

The F18 Residential Electrician Exam covers the same topics as the F17 exam but features 60 questions relevant to residential electrical work, specifically. You will have three hours to complete this open-book test, and you must answer at least 42 questions correctly to pass. 

F19 Maintenance Electrician Exam

The F19 Maintenance Electrical Exam covers the same basic topics as the F17 and F18 exams, but again with questions geared toward professionals interested in performing electrical maintenance. This open-book test has 60 questions, and you must answer a minimum of 42 correctly to pass. You will have three hours to complete the exam.
