Building a structure that a family will call home offers a measure of fulfillment that many construction professionals are drawn to. If you’re interested in becoming a part of this attractive equation, you’re going to need a proper construction license. 

In Louisiana, you can obtain a Residential Contractor License issued by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC). It permits you to contract for work on structures no more than three floors high that are meant to be used as a residence (single-family up to fourplexes). This license pertains to projects exceeding $75,000. 

You may also engage in home improvement projects. But how can you obtain this license, and what do you have to do to maintain it? 

Requirements to Obtain Your License 

There are several requirements you must meet before you can obtain your Residential Contractor License. Once you have filled out an application, you must provide a current financial statement from within the last 12 months proving a net worth of at least $10,000. 

Following the submission of your application, you will need to pass state exams and provide proof of insurance. This includes general liability coverage of at least $100,000, as well as workers’ compensation insurance. These documents should be sent directly by the insurance company to the LSLBC. 

Taking State Exams 

There are two state exams you must pass to obtain a Residential Contractor License. The first is the Residential Contractor Exam, a closed-book test featuring 80 questions on topics like: 

• Rough carpentry 
• Interior and exterior finishes 
• Concrete and rebar 
• Associated trades 
• Excavation and site work 
• Roofing 
• Masonry 
• Plans and specifications 

You will have four hours to complete this test, and you must answer a minimum of 70% of the questions correctly to pass. The second test is the Business & Law Exam, which covers topics like: 

• Contractor's licensing law 
• Bidding and estimating 
• Contract management 
• Financial management 
• Jobsite safety 
• Tax basics 

There is no time limit on this open-book test. Once you have fulfilled all requirements and obtained your license, it is valid for one year from the date of issue, after which it must be renewed. 

You need to complete six hours of continuing education (CE) each year from a board-approved provider to maintain your license. However, after the initial renewal, you may choose to renew your license for a period of one, two, or three years.
