How to Get Your C-15 License in Hawaii 

Hawaii has rigorous requirements for obtaining your electrical systems contractor license. First, you must be 18 years of age and have someone who can vouch for your good reputation for honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity, and fair dealing. Next, you’ll need to ensure you meet the experience requirement of four years of supervisory experience within the last decade.  

Once you have the required documentation in hand, you may submit your application on or before the first Tuesday of the month. Your experience certificates, project history, credit report, and entity appointment will be reviewed the following month. If your application is approved, you will be allowed to take your licensing exams. 

C-15 applicants must take two exams. The first is the C-15 Electronic Systems Contractor exam. This hour-long open-book test has 28 questions and requires a 75% score to pass. It covers topics such as: 

• General electrical knowledge 
• Safety information 
• Power supplies 
• Grounding and bonding 
• Raceways and boxes 
• Conductors and cables 
• Fire alarm signaling circuits 
• Burglar alarm and access control systems 

You must also take the Business Law exam. This closed-book test lasts 180 minutes and has 80 questions covering the following topics: 

• Business organization  
• Contract and financial management  
• Labor and lien law 
• OSHA safety requirements 

A score of 75% is required to pass the exam.  

After passing your exams, you must pay a licensing fee and furnish proof of continuous insurance coverage that is kept on file with the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Professional and Vocational Licensing Division. The board will then issue your license, which must be renewed biennially.
