Requirements for a C-12 Drywall Contractor License

Before you can become a drywall contractor in the state of Hawaii, you’ll have to meet certain criteria. First, you must be at least 18 years old. Before applying for your license, you must complete a minimum of four years of supervisory experience within the last 10 years.

Contractors must submit proof of required insurance and have a reputation for honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity, and fair dealing. When you submit your application and fees, you’ll have to provide all required documentation, including experience certificates and project history forms, a credit report, and an entity appointment. 

Finally, you’ll have to pass the applicable exams.

Exams Required for License Approval

Before your application for licensure can be approved, you’ll have to pass the required exams, including the C-12 Drywall Contractor Exam and the Hawaii Business Law Exam.

The C-12 Exam includes 25 questions, and you must answer 75% or more correctly to pass. You’ll have 60 minutes to complete this closed-book test, which covers topics like:

• Installation
• Taping and finishing
• Materials
• Estimating and plan reading
• Special applications and accessories

You’ll also have to prove your knowledge of business management and related laws before you receive your license. The Business Law Exam consists of 80 questions pertaining to the following topics:

• Business organization
• Contract management
• Estimating and bidding
• Financial management
• Labor law
• Licensing
• Lien law
• Project management
• Risk Management
• OSHA safety
• Tax laws
• Public works law

You’ll have 180 minutes to complete this closed-book exam. You must answer a minimum of 75% of the questions correctly to pass the test.
