It’s easy to forget that your ability to work as a journeyperson or master electrician depends on maintaining a valid license. Time can pass quickly, and if there’s a lapse in your license, you can’t continue working on new or ongoing projects. This guide will help you track and prepare for your license renewal.

How Often Should You Renew Your License?

Whether you’re a journeyperson or a master electrician, your license will expire every two years.

You can avoid a lapse by meeting your continuing education requirements every other year. Completing your education early in that second year will leave you with enough time to renew your license. Ideally, you should receive your new license within six months before the expiration date.

Continuing Your Education

While you should allow 60 days for the license renewal process, you’ll need extra time to meet the continuing education requirements. This part of the process will take longer for a master electrician than for a journeyperson since there are additional requirements.

In Maryland, a journeyperson must show that they completed five hours of continuing education. For greater convenience, candidates can complete all five hours online.

A master electrician needs 10 hours of continuing education coursework before applying for their license renewal. While they can complete five hours of this requirement online, the remaining five hours must be done in a live classroom. Alternatively, a webinar can take the place of in-class education.

Apply for Your License Renewal

You can conveniently renew your license online at the Maryland One-Stop portal. If you recall the process for obtaining your initial license, you’ll remember that you had to provide proof of your education. There’s a similar requirement for your license renewal.

Make sure you keep copies of your continuing education course credits. These transcripts will help you verify that you’ve met the minimum continuing education requirements.

For a journeyperson, you’ll need to show that you completed five hours of coursework. For a master electrician, make sure you can show proof of 10 hours of coursework.

Submit Your Renewal Fees

In addition to providing proof that you completed your continuing education requirements, you’ll also have to pay the correct renewal fee. A journeyperson will pay an $18.50 fee when applying for their license renewal. The state website accepts credit/debit card payments, or you can pay your licensing fee with a check.

A master electrician must submit a $31.50 application fee for their license renewal. In addition, master electricians must also provide proof of insurance coverage. At a minimum, you must maintain $300,000 in general liability coverage and $100,000 in property damage coverage.

You can find proof of your insurance coverage on the Maryland State Board of Electricians website.
