Today, many people worry about losing their jobs to technology. If you’re looking for a new and exciting career path that can stand the test of time, obtaining your electrical license in Maryland is something to consider.
As new innovations propel society into the future, your skills as an electrician are likely to rise in demand. Here’s how you can develop a plan for obtaining your electrical license in the Old Line State.
When pursuing your electrical license, you’ll have to demonstrate that you’ve gained sufficient experience working in the field. Joining the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program can be an efficient way to get experience. Alternatively, you can work in a relevant entry-level position.
Make sure to keep copies of your records to ensure you can prove that you have enough experience. Maintaining clear documentation will also help you track your hours, which is important because each type of electrical license has a different requirement. The cost of an apprenticeship license is $12.
The lowest licensing tier is the journeyperson license. This license requires the completion of four years of practical experience and 576 hours of classroom education.
The higher licensing tier is the master electrician. To qualify for this license, you must complete seven years of practical experience. You’ll still need the 576 hours of classroom education. Alternatively, you can substitute up to three years of practical experience with additional formal education.
What’s the difference between these licenses? A journeyperson can work independently on the installation and repair of electrical systems, while a master electrician designs system layouts, manages permits, and organizes projects. A master electrician can also start their own electrical services company.
When you’re ready, you’ll fill out the application for electrical license testing. In addition to providing proof that you have sufficient experience and education, you’ll pay a $65 fee. This is an open-book exam that demonstrates your familiarity with the National Electrical Code handbook. You must obtain a minimum of 70% to pass the test.
If you participated in a state-approved apprenticeship program, Maryland will generally waive the testing requirement for journeypersons. In that case, you’ll pay the testing fee and move forward in the licensing process.
When you’re ready to apply for your license, you can visit the Maryland OneStop Portal or the State Board of Electricians website. Along with your application, you must submit a copy of your exam, notarized work-history affidavits, and statements regarding your criminal history.
Additionally, there is a final licensing fee. For a journeyperson, the fee is $18.50.
For a master electrician’s license, expect to pay a $25 fee. To obtain the master electrical license, you must also provide proof of insurance. Your coverage must include a minimum of $300,000 for general liability and $100,000 for property damage.
