Requirements to Renew Your Louisiana Esthetics Instructor License

In Louisiana, esthetic instructor licenses must be renewed every two years on or before your birthday. There is a grace period of 30 days after your birth date, but renewing the license as rapidly as possible can help prevent additional fees and ensure that you continue to be able to teach. 

To renew your LA esthetics instructor license, you will need to demonstrate that you have completed at least 16 hours of approved continuing education (CE). The courses must cover teaching discipline and methodology, with three hours of the required 16 needing to be on teaching methodology. Some of the courses you can take include:

• Skin anatomy and physiology
• Teaching methodologies
• Assessment techniques for cosmetology 
• Chemical makeup of hair, skin, and nails

Keep in mind that you must maintain your underlying esthetician practitioner license to continue teaching. 

If you have been an instructor for at least five consecutive years and have completed 16 hours of CE annually, you may be eligible to obtain a master instructor license. If you get this license, you must renew it every year, not every two years. This means completing 16 hours of CE yearly. 

Once you get the necessary credits, you obtain a certificate of completion that you can use to renew your license. The Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology requires a fee, which is typically $35. 

Consequences of Not Renewing Your License on Time

The Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology will email or mail a reminder to renew your license before the expiration date. If you don't do so in a timely manner, the license will expire. This could mean facing a penalty equal to twice the applicable fee for each year that the license is expired. The maximum penalty is $300. 

If you allow your instructor license to lapse for more than three years, the state board will consider your credentials null and void. To get your credentials back, you will need to take and pass a restoration exam to prove that you are still qualified to teach. In some circumstances, you may have to take a refresher course before your license is renewed.
