In Oregon, the Board of Electrologists and Body Art Practitioners governs licensed body piercers. This board handles all license renewals for professional body piercers, and they have certain requirements you must meet each year. 

For body piercers, license renewal is an annual process. This means you have to fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements before your renewal date every year.

Oregon Body Piercer CE Hours: 10 Per Year

Every licensed body piercer must obtain 10 hours of continuing education prior to license renewal each year. These hours must be submitted on your renewal application, and you're required to maintain records of your studies. 

Five Hours Can Be Obtained Through Self-Study

Five of your 10 annual CE hours can be obtained through self-study, meaning you choose the materials you want to learn from. There's lots of flexibility in this. 

The board has approved the following methods of self-study:

• Online courses
• Films and videos
• Presentations and individual slides
• Textbooks and audiobooks
• Any printed publications related to body piercing

If you go the online course route, the courses must be provided by an approved national home study organization. 

Approved Topics for Oregon Body Piercer Continuing Education 

Self-study provides an important opportunity to explore your specific passions in the field of body piercing. In order for your CE hours to count, they must be related to body piercing as a profession or business practice. 

Any of the following subject areas is acceptable to study:

• Client safety
• Medical emergencies during body piercing sessions
• Body piercing regulations and laws
• Client consultations
• Business ethics
• Business management and regulations

This list is not exhaustive. Any other topic related to body piercing (including laws, regulations, health and safety, and client interactions) will likely count toward your five hours of self-study. 

Important Note: CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens Training Don't Count

You cannot count your required CPR and bloodborne pathogens training or certifications in your annual CE hours. 

These requirements are independent of the 10-hour requirement for license renewal. No matter what you study on your own, you must take approved training to get your certifications in these areas. 

Reporting Your CE Hours for License Renewal

Oregon requires you to self-report your CE hours each year on your license renewal application. This is called “attestation,” but it doesn't come without regulations. 

It's a good idea to keep solid documentation of your hours on hand. The board can request your CE study records at any time within the required documentation period. 

Required Documentation Period

Licensed body piercers in the state of Oregon are required to keep their CE documentation for at least five years after the renewal period. There's a handy form online (the self-study continuing education verification form) provided by the board to help you keep track.
