experience requirements, pass the mandatory exam, and properly submit your application.

Choosing the Right Electrical Inspector Classification

Your route to becoming an electrical inspector depends on the specific certification you’re looking to obtain.

The electrical inspector one- and two-family certification allows license holders to inspect electrical installations in these residential dwellings and similar properties. The electrical inspector general certification covers commercial, industrial, and any type of residential property.

Kentucky Electrical Inspector Experience Requirements

To apply for the one- and two-family classification, you’ll need at least four years of immediately preceding experience working with residential wiring systems. The general license classification requires at least eight years of experience, which must cover a range of residential, commercial, and industrial wiring systems.

There are alternative routes to demonstrate the required experience. A registered professional electrical engineer with at least three years of professional experience will likely qualify. Currently licensed and active master electricians can also obtain inspector certification if they pass the required exam.

You can also reduce the amount of experience needed with specific educational requirements. Successfully completed electrical courses from an accredited vocational school or college can count for up to two years of qualifying experience.

Passing the Kentucky Electrical Inspector Exam

To acquire your license, you will need to pass the Kentucky Electrical Inspector Exam. Both of the certifications require a passing grade of 70% for their respective exams.

The one- and two-family exam focuses specifically on installations in those types of residential properties. The general exam covers a broader range of installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. In either case, you’ll need to be familiar with both practical application and code requirements.

Preparing for your exam isn’t about simply memorizing specific code requirements. Instead, you’ll need to know how to find and apply the proper code standards for given scenarios. Structured exam preparation can help you review tested material, practice answering questions, and familiarize yourself with reference materials used in the exam.

Submitting Your Electrical Inspector Certification Application

Once you obtain a passing score on your exam, you can submit your application to the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. You’ll need to include your exam results, documentation of your qualifying experience, and a recent passport photo. There’s also a $100 certification fee to be paid at this time.

Applicants other than government-employed inspectors must also provide proof of a $5,000 bond to get their license. Once certified, you’ll have to renew each year. Your certification expires on the last day of your birth month, and renewal requires completing at least 12 hours of approved continuing education and a $50 fee.
