In Wisconsin, professionals who inspect one- and two-family dwellings must hold certification under the Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC). To become a Wisconsin UDC construction inspector , you’ll need the right qualifications to apply for your license and to pass the associated exam. 

What Does a Wisconsin UDC Construction Inspector Do? 

Certified UDC construction inspectors evaluate residential construction to ensure compliance with the Wisconsin Administrative Code. That includes rules covering building construction, energy conservation, and code administration. There are separate certifications required for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC inspections. 

Inspectors carefully document their findings and provide reports to property owners and their agents. They must provide these records to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) upon request. This makes maintaining accurate records and consistent enforcement essential in this role. 

Qualifications for Certification 

There are two different routes to qualify for certification. Most applicants qualify by passing the UDC Construction Inspector Certification exam. Individuals who hold a current Wisconsin commercial building inspector license can take an alternative route by submitting a copy of their certification with their application. 

Applying for Your License 

To apply for licensing, you’ll need to use the state’s LicensE portal. You’ll create an account, select the UDC construction inspector license, and submit the required application. At this time, you’ll also have to pay the required fees. The DSPS may request additional documents to be uploaded to the platform. 

The DSPS will review your application and documents and then confirm whether you’re eligible to take the exam. You can check in on your status using your application number. If you don’t pass your exam, you’ll have to reapply and pay another examination fee to take the test again. 

The Wisconsin UDC Construction Inspector Exam 

The Wisconsin UDC Construction Inspector exam consists of 115 questions, which you’ll have three hours to complete. The open-book test has a passing grade of 70%. The exam covers codes including SPS 305, SPS 320 through 322, and the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code Appendix. 

You can bring approved references and printed notes in one binder. They must be properly bound. Loose paper and sticky notes aren’t allowed. You can’t bring along practice exams either. 

Preparing to Take Your Exam 

Preparing for your exam isn’t just about memorizing provisions. Instead, it requires an understanding of how these reference codes and materials are used. You’ll need to be able to quickly locate the relevant information for the given exam questions. Familiarity with terminology, plans, and calculations is also essential. 

Keeping Your Certification Current 

Once you receive your certification, you’ll need to renew it after four years. The term expires on June 30 of the renewal year. During each four-year term, you are required to complete 24 hours of approved continuing education. There is a $40 renewal fee, although you can face additional charges for applying late.
